Work

Curious and inquisitive by nature, I produce podcasts, audio documentaries, feature stories, and field reporting that is thoughtful, nuanced, and thoroughly researched and edited. Here is a selection of some of my favorite work.

Podcast Production

I have worked on a wide variety of podcast projects ranging from weekly pop culture interview shows to serialized narrative and investigative podcasts to educational podcasts for parents.

  • Monumental

    My Role: Senior Producer

Monumental is a 10-episode anthology podcast series from PRX that takes a fresh look at the contested and shifting landscape of monuments and memorials across the greater U.S., with an emphasis on first-person storytelling.

As senior producer, I managed and supported a geographically far flung team of independent audio producers in creative documentary storytelling. My role was wide ranging and encompassed building and overseeing systems + production processes as well as being an editorial leader on story edits, episode structure and sound design. I scored and assembled sound-rich assembly mixes in Pro Tools and directed voiceover tracking sessions with our series host, Ashley C. Ford, as well as with episode producers. I also contributed field reporting and produced a sound-rich mini-segment on the evolution of George Floyd Square in Minneapolis.

  • Sent Away

    My Role: Producer

Sent Away is an award-winning investigative podcast from APM Reports examining abuses in Utah’s ‘troubled teen’ residential treatment industry.

  • In Deep

    My Role: Producer

In Deep (Season Two), is a narrative documentary podcast from APM Reports about what happens to people when systems fail after a climate disaster.

Audio Documentary

I have produced two in-depth historical audio documentaries about 20th century Minneapolis social history.

  • A Fiery Unrest: Why Plymouth Avenue Burned

“A Fiery Unrest: Why Plymouth Avenue Burned” is a feature-length audio documentary that revisits the causes and consequences of racial unrest and street violence that brought National Guard troops to North Minneapolis during the turbulent Long Hot Summer of 1967. Similar to the racial justice protests we saw in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder in 2020, the late 1960s were a time when pent-up frustrations about racial discrimination came to a head on city streets across the United States.

  • The Godfather of Black Space in Minneapolis

“The Godfather of Black Space in Minneapolis,” is a feature-length audio documentary tracing the life and legacy of Anthony Brutus Cassius, an overlooked Twin Cities labor organizer, civil rights leader and entrepreneur who fought to be the first Black person in Minnesota to get a liquor license and open a bar in downtown Minneapolis in the late 1940s. I co-produced this work, which included a party and community listening event, in collaboration with Twin Cities food writer and professional chef Mecca Bos.

Audio Features

My award-winning audio features about Minnesota people, arts and culture have aired on NPR’s Weekend All Things Considered and Here and Now as well as the BBC, The World and Latino USA among other outlets.

  • You Have Dark Skin and You Are Beautiful: The Long Fight Against Skin Bleaching (NPR)

  • Poets And Poetry Lovers Alike Lament Loss Of 'The Writer's Almanac' (NPR)

  • How Black Lives Matter Got An Anthem (KFAI and BBC Cultural Frontline)

  • Dancing Underwater While Trying Not To Drown (KFAI)

  • How Chef Yia Vang Is Putting His Own Twist On Hmong Cuisine (The World)

I am a go-to field producer for national and international outlets doing reporting and production in the upper Midwest. This includes tape syncs, documentary audio production, vox pop. research and in-depth interviews with local sources.
